The 2024 Big Bike Ride will start at 9am (approximately) on Sunday 12th May 2024. Starting times will be confirmed closer to the date.
From Westminster Abbey to Islip through royal parks, and country lanes, this is a unique and beautiful 70-mile route from central London to the ancient village of Islip in Oxfordshire, the birthplace of Edward the Confessor.
Starting outside Westminster Abbey, you will ride through Hyde Park and the Georgian splendour of Holland Park. Emerging near Wembley you tackle Harrow on the Hill and emerge from London directly into the beautiful, rolling, Chiltern hills.
With the woods and winding lanes behind you, the route takes the Phoenix Trail, an old railway line converted to a cycle path, across the Oxfordshire plain to Thame (with an optional bypass of the Phoenix Trail for serious cyclists). Then it’s just a short hop around the Otmoor Nature Reserve to the finish at Islip Village Hall.
The Big Bike Ride welcomes those who cycle regularly as well as those looking simply for a fun family day out. There will be refreshment stops and support en route, a party atmosphere at the finish, and a commemorative gift.
Your registration fee covers administration, refreshments both en route and at the finish, a finish line gift, and free physiotherapy for riders. Costs are subsidised by our sponsors, and the profits will benefit the two organising charities (The Friends of Dr South’s School, and St Nicholas’ Church).
Some first-aid support will be available on the ride, and mechanical support will be provided en route.
Route downloads will be available to registered riders in TCX and GPX format.
Fundraising (with Prizes!)
This is a fundraising event, and we strongly encourage all riders to seek sponsorship to further benefit the charities supported by the ride.
Whoever raises the most on JustGiving will receive a Magnum Lauren Perrier champagne from The Swan Inn and the second most will be rewarded with a treatment session from Clinic on the Green. (Note: Both offers must be accepted by an adult over 18 years, if the winner is a minor.)
Transport to the Ride
When you book your place on the ride you can arrange for you and/or your bike to be transported to London. See the Transport page for more information on bike & rider transport.
Note that all riders under the age of 16 years on the day of the ride will need to be accompanied by an adult. We will contact you after your purchase to ask for details for the rider(s), including name and age.
Finish Line Gift
Riders may receive a commemorative mug at the finish line in Islip. Please let us know if the rider / riders would not like to receive a gift.
